This is your loss too
Pregnancy loss doesn't only affect the person who was pregnant.
It affects Men and partners too. You may have found yourself trying to be strong, supporting the person you love while putting your own feelings to one side. You may have been the one attending appointments, making cups of tea, holding everything together and trying to carry on.
But somewhere amongst all of that, perhaps nobody has asked you:
“And how are you?”
You may not have physically experienced the pregnancy or miscarriage, but you can absolutely experience the emotional loss.
And your grief matters too.
You don't have to be the strong one here
I've spoken to men and partners who have been surprised when I've asked about their own experience of Pregnancy Loss.
Sometimes simply being given permission to grieve can be emotional.
There is growing recognition that partners can be overlooked following miscarriage. Organisations such as Tommy's and the Miscarriage Association recognise that partners can experience their own grief, while often feeling that they need to support the person who was pregnant first.
This is something I've seen in my own work too.
I've often seen the surprise when I ask:
“And how are you? This is your loss too.”
A space for your experience
I offer individual counselling for men and partners following miscarriage and pregnancy loss.
This is a space for you to tell your story — to talk about what happened, how the loss has affected you and what your experience has been like.
We can talk about your partner, of course. We can talk about how they're doing, how you're supporting each other and how the loss has affected your relationship.
But this is your space too.
You don't have to spend the whole session making sure everyone else is okay.
You can talk about sadness, anger, guilt, helplessness, fear or whatever else you're carrying. You can talk about the things you haven't felt able to say out loud.
Pregnancy loss can change more than you expect
A miscarriage can affect your relationship, your confidence about trying again, your friendships and your sense of what the future was going to look like.
You may find that you and your partner are grieving very differently.
Sometimes two people can experience the same loss in completely different ways.
Two things can be true.
You can love and support your partner while also feeling completely lost yourself.
You don't have to figure it out alone
My own experiences of pregnancy loss, alongside my previous work as an early pregnancy nurse, have given me a particular understanding of how much emotional care can be missing alongside the medical care.
I'm not here to tell you how you should feel or what you should do. I'm here to listen to your story, including the difficult, uncomfortable or shameful parts.
I'm gentle, calm and approachable, but I'm not afraid of the dark.
And there can be room for laughter too. Counselling doesn't have to feel heavy every minute.
If you're wondering whether counselling is for you, you don't need to have the right words or even know exactly what you need.
If you're looking for miscarriage counselling for men or individual counselling following pregnancy loss, you are very welcome to get in touch.
We can start with a conversation.
I offer a free, no-obligation 15-minute call, so you can see whether I'm someone you feel comfortable talking to.
You have a place here too.
