Pregnancy after Loss

Counselling and emotional support after miscarriage and pregnancy loss

Finding out you are pregnant again after experiencing a miscarriage or pregnancy loss can be incredibly complicated.

A positive pregnancy test may be exactly what you hoped for, the joyful moment you imagined it would be yet instead you may feel frightened, numb, anxious or unable to believe it is really happening.

You might find yourself taking a pregnancy test, then taking another one. Checking your symptoms. Worrying when they change. Feeling anxious about your first scan, or frightened about getting through the weeks ahead.

If this sounds familiar, there is nothing wrong with you.

After pregnancy loss, it is understandable that a new pregnancy can feel very different from how you imagined it would.

Considering Trying Again After Loss

Deciding whether you are ready to try for another pregnancy can bring complicated and conflicting feelings.

You may desperately want to be pregnant again while also being terrified of experiencing another loss.

You might be wondering:

What if it happens again?

How will I cope with another pregnancy?

Am I ready to try again?

There is no right way to feel, and no correct timeline for deciding when you are ready.

Counselling can give you a safe space to explore these feelings without judgement or pressure.

When You Are Pregnant Again

Pregnancy after loss can feel like an emotional rollercoaster.

You might:

  • Feel anxious between appointments and scans

  • Check and re-check pregnancy symptoms

  • Feel numb rather than excited

  • Struggle to believe the pregnancy is real

  • Worry constantly that something will go wrong

  • Feel frightened about bonding with your baby

  • Find it difficult to enjoy the pregnancy

  • Feel anxious as you approach the stage of pregnancy when you experienced your loss

  • Feel guilty that you aren't feeling the joy you expected

You may find yourself holding hope and fear at the same time.

A positive pregnancy test doesn't always feel like the joyful moment you imagined it would. After loss, it can be difficult to trust your body, your pregnancy and to believe that this time might be different.

Your feelings are understandable. You don't have to pretend that you're okay.

You Don't Have to Feel Grateful or Positive

You may feel that you should be happy now that you are pregnant again. Perhaps other people expect you to feel relieved and excited too.

But pregnancy after loss can bring fear alongside hope. You don't have to force yourself to feel positive, and you don't have to minimise your anxiety because this is a pregnancy you wanted.

There is space for all of these feelings.

Specialist Experience

My experience supporting people through pregnancy loss began during my work as an Early Pregnancy Specialist Nurse. Alongside my nursing background and specialist counselling training, I am also a bereaved mother with personal experience of pregnancy loss.

I bring both professional knowledge and lived experience to my work. I understand that pregnancy after loss can bring a complicated mix of hope, fear and uncertainty, and I offer a warm, compassionate and approachable space where you can talk openly about whatever this experience is bringing up for you, without judgement.

How I Can Help

I offer warm, compassionate one-to-one counselling for people who are considering trying again or who are pregnant following miscarriage or pregnancy loss.

Counselling can give you somewhere to talk openly about your fears, your previous loss and the emotions that can come with pregnancy after loss.

There is no expectation that you should feel positive, grateful or excited all of the time. We can work at your pace, with whatever you are experiencing.

I offer in-person counselling in Bristol and online counselling.

You don't have to navigate pregnancy after loss alone.

If you would like to talk about how you're feeling and whether counselling could help, you're very welcome to get in touch.

I offer a free 15-minute phone or Zoom call so we can talk briefly about what you're experiencing and you can see whether counselling with me feels right for you.
